Official directory of building addresses

The official directory of building addresses lists all official addresses in Switzerland (i.e. all binding addresses for the authorities). All buildings are required to have at least one unambiguous address. All buildings used as dwellings or workplaces, plus buildings of general public interest, must be listed in the official directory of building addresses.

Addresses are the most frequently used geographic location parameters both in daily life and by companies.
In the official directory of building addresses, every building entrance is clearly identified and given an equally unambiguous building address. It also contains:

  • House numbers
  • The applicable street name from the official directory of street names
  • The applicable name of the locality and the post code from the official directory of municipalities
  • The applicable name and number of the municipality from the official directory of municipalities
  • The geographic location
  • The status of the «building address».

Status of the data

swisstopo updates the data based on the buildings and dwellings register.

Publication of updates

Each municipality (and sometimes the canton itself) enters most of the content of this directory in the buildings and dwellings register that is compiled by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). The FSO delivers the data each day to swisstopo, which where necessary supplements them with data from the cadastral survey and subsequently publishes them for use free of charge by everyone.

The official street directory is publicly available and can be downloaded free of charge from
