On July 1, 2008, the ordinance governing geographic names (GeoNV) came into effect. This new ordinance – pertaining among others to the names of municipalities, towns and cities, roads and stations – resolves and defines the responsibilities of the various bodies concerned with geographic names. In addition, it certifies the central role of the cadastral survey as the guarantor of all official geographic names – except for the names of municipalities and stations, which are administered by other federal authorities.
