The confederation

The strategic level

The Confederation is entrusted with the strategic guidance of the overall task of cadastral surveying.
The technical department responsible for the official cadastral survey is the Federal Directorate of Cadastral Surveying (Art. 40 of the Ordinance on Official Cadastral Surveying). Its responsibilities are as follows:

  • Guidance and overall supervision of the Swiss cadastre; issue of instructions and guidelines
  • Coordination between the official cadastre and other federal surveying projects, advice to federal departments on the procurement of cadastral survey data, and representation of the interests of the confederation in dealings with the cantons and third parties.

Federal Directorate of Cadastral Surveying
Since 1st January 1999 the Federal Directorate of Cadastral Surveying is a divison of  the Federal Office of Topography swisstopo and is thus integrated in the Federal Department for Defence, Civil Protection and Sport.

Within the organization of swisstopo, the Federal Directorate of Cadastral Surveying belongs to the sector "Geocoordination" where it carries the responsibility for the product "cadastral surveying".
