The larger cities and towns have survey departments which are responsible for the cadastre within their municipality. In all other cases the task is undertaken by private engineering and survey offices. These firms are headed by a licensed surveyor.
Cadastral survey is an excellent example of effective and mutually beneficial cooperation between government and the private sector over many years.
Because cadastral survey data is legally, certain work may be carried out only by licensed surveyors or by public bodies or legal entities which have their own survey department under the direction of a licensed person (see Art. 44, Para. 1 of the Ordinance on Official Cadastral Surveying).
Across Switzerland there are some 270 private engineering and survey offices, with about 3000 staff, entrusted with the tasks of survey, management and revision of cadastral data.
