The operational management of the official cadastral survey lies with the canton: it lays down the overall cantonal production plan, plans and directs the work and specifies cantonal standards for its execution. It checks cadastral survey work and approves it, after elimination of errors where applicable. The survey then assumes the status of "official public document" (Art. 43 of the Ordinance on Official Cadastral Surveying and Art. 5 of the Technical Ordinance on Official Cadastral Surveying).
20 cantons operate their own survey supervision services in order to take care of this responsibility.
The Cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Glarus, Nidwalden, Obwalden and Uri have delegated the operational management of cadastral surveying back to the Federal Directorate, as has the Principality of Liechtenstein.
